The current epic popularity of CBD (cannabidiol) for humans is unprecedented in the natural health industry. However, CBD for pets is also quickly becoming many dog, cat and horse owners’ new natural go-to for both supplementation and therapeutic aid. Ongoing research confirming the safety and efficacy of CBD supplementation for dogs and cats has veterinarians everywhere paying attention. Let’s take a look at what we know so far about the benefits of CBD oil for dogs, cats and horses.
The Endocannabinoid System, CBD And Your Pet
Cannabinoids, such as CBD, are effective in both the prevention and treatment of various conditions due to their activity with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This vast network of ECS receptors is found in human and mammalian bodies. For this reason, animals can benefit from non-toxic, natural, broad-spectrum CBD oil in the same way that humans can. Of course, the dosage must be adjusted to accommodate the animal’s size, weight and condition: (More about that later).
CBD For Dogs
The bulk of the research on CBD for pets has been conducted on dogs. There is very scant research on cats and even less on horses. Most evidence of the effective use of CBD for pets is from anecdotal evidence. There have, however, been several clinical studies on the use of CBD for epilepsy in dogs as well as osteoarthritis.
Many dog owners have reported improvement in their aging dogs’ quality of life when they supplement daily with CBD. CBD has pain relief, anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety therapeutic properties, which address key symptoms in dogs with osteoarthritis as well as other conditions.
If your dog has seizures, CBD supplementation might be a natural alternative to pharmaceutical medications. Even though CBD is non-toxic, if your dog is currently on chemical medications, consult your veterinarian. CBD might not interact well with certain chemical medications.
CBD For Cats
CBD can be used for treating the same conditions in cats as in dogs. Of course, the dosage would be much less. As a matter of fact CBD has been shown to deliver the best results when taken in small doses, even for humans. There is a great deal of anecdotal evidence of successfully using small daily doses of CBD oil for cats with seizures.
Also, cats, unlike dogs, do not do well with THC products derived from marijuana. It is best to use a high quality broad spectrum, THC free, hemp derived CBD oil, for yourself or your pets.
CBD For Horses
Horse owners are also experiencing great results in using CBD as both a supplement and therapeutically for various conditions. Seizures in horses can stem from various health conditions such as rabies, tetanus, or fungal infections. Horse owners have reported success in dosing CBD to ease the seizures. CBD is also supplemented daily for anxiety and nervous temperament in horses.
Of course, dosing for a large animal like a horse needs to be done by weight and direction from your veterinarian is advised.
There is still a great deal of research to be done on supplementing pets with CBD for various conditions; however, because CBD is non-toxic why not give it a try for your fur friend? Just make sure you use small doses and only the highest quality CBD oil.
